Lakeshore Entertainment and Screen Gems will team for Underworld 3: The Rise of the Lycans with Michael Sheen, Bill Nighy and Rhona Mitra on board to star. Len Wiseman, who directed the first two films in the franchise, will produce. The prequel will trace the origins of the centuries-old blood feud between the aristocratic vampires known as Death Dealers and their onetime slaves, the Lycans.
In the Dark Ages, a young Lycan named Lucian (Sheen) emerges as a powerful leader who rallies the werewolves to rise up against Viktor (Nighty), the cruel vampire king who has enslaved them. Lucian is joined by his secret lover Sonja (Mitra) in his battle against the Death Dealer army and his struggle for Lycan freedom.

Patrick Tatopoulos, who developed the creatures for the first two films, will direct from a screenplay by Danny McBride. Shooting will begin in January in Auckland, New Zealand.
The Hollywood Reporter announced on October 26th, 2007 that the film will be written by Danny McBride and mark the directorial debut of Patrick Tatopoulos, who designed the creature effects for all three Underworld films. Len Wiseman will produce the film but will not write or direct, nor will Kate Beckinsale reprise her lead role of Selene.[5][6] The film is to be a prequel set in the Dark Ages and will focus on the origins of the feud between the vampires and their slaves, the Lycans.[7] The film will be shot in Auckland, New Zealand and in Roxboro, North Carolina.
